If you have a new digital SLR camera or just want to learn to take and process better digital photographs here’s a great opportunity!

A mid-week workshop is being offered to provide enthusiastic, novice digital photographers the opportunity to work with a professionally trained photographer and computer expert to enhance their digital photography skills. Taking place in the midst of the beautiful snowy Green Mountains, the workshop will have both in-house sessions as well as photography time in the field with a local area naturalist and local guides. If you wish, you can come a day or two early or stay later and do some skiing as well.

Date: Tuesday January 29 (evening arrival) to Friday February 1, 2008 (depart after breakfast)

Location: Warren, Vermont located in the Mad River Valley close to Mad River Glen and Sugarbush ski resorts and nearby towns of Waitsfield, Fayston and Moretown.

The overall workshop price depends on the B&B and room that you choose, with prices from around $450 each based on double occupancy. All meals are included.

Equipment to bring: Digital SLR camera, a laptop computer loaded with Photoshop, creativity and enthusiasm. (If you do not have some of these items or have other questions on what to bring please let us know.) You will receive on arrival a binder containing "Introduction to Photoshop" authored by Sam Krotinger.

Enrollment: Limited to 16 participants. All bookings MUST be made no later than January 14th 2008. (The workshop may get cancelled or postponed if there is not sufficient interest.)

Faculty:

    Sam Krotinger has been teaching post secondary and high school photography since 2000. For the past several years, he has been running 10 week and weekend digital photography/Photoshop classes for the Mad River Valley community. Sam has a Bachelors degree in Studio Art from University of Vermont, a Masters of Education in Art from the University of Vermont, and a Masters of Fine Arts from the Art Institute of Boston.

    Sean Lawson, Naturalist Program Director at Mad River Glen, has over 15 years experience teaching in the field and classroom settings. He holds Bachelor’s degree in Ecology and Environmental Studies and a Master’s degree in Forest Ecology. Sean is currently certified as a Wilderness First Responder, has Rescuer/Level C CPR certification, has five years experience on Ski Patrol, and has completed Outdoor Education and Leave-No-Trace training with the National Outdoor Leadership School.


The activities for the 3 days will be approximately as follows:

Tuesday afternoon/evening:

  • Arrive at the B&B of your choice and enjoy a light dinner.
Wednesday:
  • Breakfast at your B&B then meet at Mad River Glen no later than 9:45 AM
  • 10:00 AM: How to get the best from your digital SLR – first tutorial by Sam Krotinger
  • 11:30 AM: Snowshoe walk with Sean Lawson with opportunities for photos of everything from skiers to squirrels!
  • 1:00 PM: Lunch at Mad River Glen – you will have a voucher (you can add to it in cash if you wish)
  • 1:45 PM: Second Snowshoe walk with Sean to take photos.
  • 3:00 PM: Intro to Photoshop and Workflow management – second tutorial by Sam Krotinger
  • 6:00 PM: Return to B&B
  • 7:30 PM: Dinner at the Weathertop Inn
Thursday:
  • Breakfast at your B&B then meet at Waitsfield Covered Bridge no later than 9:45 AM
  • 10:00 AM: Guided walking tour of Waitsfield to take photos of the town and the river
  • 12:30 PM: Lunch at White Horse Inn
  • 1:30 PM: Working with your photos
  • 3:30 PM: Photo editing and presentation with Photoshop – third tutorial by Sam Krotinger, plus Q&A.
  • 5:30 PM: Return to B&B
  • 7:00 PM: Dinner at West Hill House
  • 8:30 PM: "Best of" photo presentation by participants
Friday:
  • Breakfast at your B&B then depart.
